Here’s a list of pros and cons to consider before writing your own vows.

Writing and reading personalized vows on your wedding day can create a unique experience for everyone. You break away from tradition and design vows that really mean something to you and your significant other, but that doesn’t make it easy.

Pro: Becoming the author of your own wedding vows adds a personal, modern touch to your ceremony.

Con: Writing your own vows can be very challenging, and in some religions isn’t allowed.

Pro: You know your relationship better than anyone else, and a traditional set of vows might not express your relationship like you want. Maybe you want to share something more and make a promise a little more specific than sticking together “for better or worse, in sickness and health.”

Con: Neither of you are good at expressing how you feel, and neither of you are very good writers.

(This can be a pro, too! You don’t have to worry about “outdoing each other” and you don’t have to be a five-star author to write something that has special meaning for the two of you.)

Pro: If you have a large family like mine, you always have at least one wedding to attend during the summer. Sharing custom vows is a great way to introduce something new for your guests to enjoy.

Con: On the other hand, if your vows are very personal, sometimes they can be confusing for your guests. They might not understand all of the little inside jokes that you share between one another.

Pro: Get creative! Express your vow in another form. If you are a stronger musician than you are a writer, write an original song or perform a well-known love song that defines your relationship. There are no limits (you may want to double check with your officiant first though).

Con: Public speaking. Enough said. ••• If you’ve decided that you would each like to write your own vows, check out our guideline. If you’re still on the fence, be sure to check with your officiant or take a look at these traditional popular vows throughout world religions.
